Background for dataThe cancer mortality data have been collated by Kurihara et al. (1989) from available files of the World Health Organization (WHO) except for those from the US which were derived from Vital Statistics of the United States (Kurihara et al. , 1989). The data were made available by courtesy of Prof. Hiroshi Ogawa, Aichi Mizuho University. The data set consists of the age-adjusted biennial mortality rates (i.e. deaths per 100,000) in 43 countries (of the 46 mentioned in the original publication) for 17 cancer sites for women and 15 cancer sites for men over the years 1968 to 1985. The classification of the diseases was based on the International Classification of Diseases, ICD (1950, 1957,1967, 1977), and the relevant list numbers corresponding to each malignant neoplasm in the 6th to 9th Revision of the ICD, as well as the years when each Revision of the ICD was used in each country, can be found in Kurihara et al. (1989) Table B and C, respectively. "The total male and female population in 46 countries around 1950 (Dr. Segi's world population) was used as a standard population in calculating age-adjusted death rates. A [.] ten-year age-group was used (for calculating age-adjusted death rates) from 1968-69 to 1984-85" (Kurihara et al , 1984, p. vii). Table 1 gives a list of the cancer sites, and the countries are listed in Table 2. Countries with unreliable or non-existing data, for example all African countries, were excluded. Independent estimates of the measurement errors across countries and sites were not available. Go to Top of Page Data descriptionSource of the dataKurihara M, Aoki K, Hisimachi S. (Eds.).
